Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt?

Vaping is supposed to be an alternative to smoking cigarettes. But if your vape tastes burnt, you’re probably not having a great experience which will make the journey to stopping smoking much harder than it needs to be.

But don’t worry, there’s a way out of this rut! And we can give you the details on how to get you there.

Burnt vapes can actually be due to a number of things. We’re here to explain how this can be a very common issue and there are some easy ways to troubleshoot why it is happening and fix it quickly. Lets get started!

Vaping at Too High of a Wattage

As mentioned, the burnt taste of your vape is caused by a number of factors. One of the most common reason is that you are vaping at too high a wattage for your coil.

How to fix it
• If you are vaping at too high a wattage for your coil and wicks, lower the wattage on your device until you find the sweet spot. Keep your tank / dripper saturated with your vape juice while testing this out. You’ll know it’s right when the experience is smooth.
• If using a tank check your coil packaging. They will usually state a recommended wattage to vape at for the coils you have (Example: Aegis Boost coils: 0.6Ω Ka1 mesh – Recommended wattage is 15W to 25W).

Vape Juice Being High in Sugars

A burnt taste can also come from e liquid that is high in sugar. As you vape, the heat can ‘caramelise’ the vape juice on the coils. As time goes on with further usage, the caramelised substance can end up burning.

This then gives off the burnt taste when you continue to take hits. Coils naturally need to be replaced every now and then, but if this is happening too soon followed with a burnt taste, this may be your problem.

How to fix it
• Check your coil or wicks – you want to check the appearance. Is it coated in a thick / black substance? If so, switch out your coil and try a different vape juice.
• If the issue doesn’t occur with a different e liquid, the issue is possibly down to the flavour you were vaping on.

Not Priming Your Coils

So, you’ve popped a new coil in your mod and you’re ready to go to flavour town. You take your very first hit and to your surprise, you’re getting a burnt taste already! If this is happening to you, it could be due to not preparing your fresh coils properly.

How to fix it
• Once you’ve added your new coil, fill your tank with your desired vape liquid. Or if you’re using a dripper, saturate your wicks nicely.
• Then here comes the hard part – you have to wait. Give it 5 or so minutes for the e-liquid to soak in, then try vaping again!
• Fresh coils and wicks can have a bit of a ‘cotton taste’ initially. Priming your coils also helps to reduce this! This will disappear quickly, so not to worry.

A Dry Hit

The dreaded dry hit… A dry hits happen when your tank or dripper is low on e liquid. If you’ve been vaping a while, you have likely experienced this!

When this happens, you can get a harsh hit to the chest. This is often followed by a burning smell. If this happens repeatedly, the cotton in the coil can be burnt in the process too. This means that even if you add more e liquid after your dry hit the cotton still has the burn / damage attached.

How to fix it
• Always keep your tank filled with your best vape juice, and if dripping keep your wicks well saturated.
• If you’ve had a recent dry hit, check your coils to see if they have been burnt or have any damage.
• If they have been burnt, replace the coil, prime your coils, and ensure your new coil stays saturated.
• If you can’t see any burnt areas / damage, replace the coil or change your wicks to be safe and see if this resolves the burnt taste.

Dud Coils

You’ve done literally everything right, but each coil you try from your pack is tasting burnt. This could be due to an issue with the coil batch, or even fake coils.

How to fix it
• Buy some new coils from a different vape shop.
• Test these in your device with your vape juice.
• If this solves your issue, it was likely an issue with the batch of coils you used. Contact the coil supplier / manufacturer to let them know.
• Try to buy future coils from reputable suppliers.

Using a Disposable Vape?

If you’ve been using a vape bar and are experiencing a burnt taste, it could be that the product has simply ran out of vape liquid or even that it is faulty.

How to fix it
• Have you just purchased it and it’s already tasting burnt? Contact the company you purchased the vape bar from to let them know that there is a defect. Provide as many details as you can (photos of the device, batch details if you can find them, etc).
• Have you been using it for quite a while? Even if you think you can’t have reached the number of puffs stated but it’s probably pretty close… It’s likely just out of juice.
• Disposable and recycle your disposable vape bar and go grab a new one! We have a handy guide on how to dispose of and recycle vape bars.
• Try a different brand next time if you were not 100% happy with the last.
