What is an E Liquid Ratio?

It can be daunting when you first explore vaping. There’s a lot of terms for different e-liquids such as “shortfills”, “ratios” and “VG / PG”.

This guide will help you understand what e-liquid ratios you should be buying and why… and we’ll keep it nice and simple – focussing on the most popular ratios available within the UK!

Basic terms

Here are some basic terms to make this easier, some of which include eliquid ingredients.

Vegetable Glycerine (VG) = Thicker component of e-liquids. It helps to product “clouds” when vaping.

Propylene Glycol (PG) = Thinner component of e-liquids. Great for carrying flavour and adding throat hit.

Shortfill E-liquid = A 60ml bottle, filled with 50ml of 0mg e-liquid.
You may be asking why there is space left in the shortfill bottle… Good question! This isn’t like crisp brands who half fill the bags – The space left in the bottle is room left for a 10ml nicotine shot.
When added and shaken thoroughly, this produces a 60ml bottle of e-liquid at 3mg strength.

Nicotine Salt E-liquid = 10ml bottles of e-liquid with the addition of nicotine salt.
Nicotine salts are different to the typical nicotine used on e-liquids. It helps provides a smoother hit at higher strengths.
Nicotine salts are usually found in 10mg and 20mg. Note: Higher than 20mg nicotine content is not allowed in a 10ml bottle due to regulation.

So Ratios… What do they even mean?

An e-liquid ratio is the amount of (VG) to (PG) in an e-liquid. To keep it short, higher VG makes the e-liquid a ‘thicker’ consistency with bigger, denser vape clouds.

Similar to making a glass of fruit juice – Using 1 part juice to 3 parts water would be a ratio of 1:3.

Thinner e-liquids, with a higher percentage of PG, are great for enhancing flavour and adding throat hit, giving a similar feeling to smoking a cigarette.

PG and VG make up the bulk of the e-liquid base alongside flavourings and nicotine, so they’re important to consider.

50VG / 50PG E-Liquid

This is the ratio you will ‘typically’ find 10ml e liquids and nicotine salts at. This is because they are ideal for the vape starter kits and pod mods available.

Thicker e-liquids are designed to be vaped at higher temperatures, and starter kits / vape pens typically work at lower temperatures so 50VG/50PG ratios are ideal for them.

If you have a vape pen, a basic starter kit, or pod mod, this is the ratio you want to be looking at buying.

Although typically found in 10mls, NovaVapes offer 50VG e-liquids in shortfill form too. These start at £5.95 and include a free shot which will save you a fortune compared to typical vape shop 10ml prices. Once the nicotine shot is added, this produces a 3mg e liquid.

For that extra kick, we also offer nicotine salt e liquid.

These are ideal for the new vaper who has recently transitioned from smoking, due to the high strength and smooth consistent hit of nicotine used.

70VG / 30PG E-Liquid

You will typically find shortfill e-liquids in this ratio. These work very well with medium to high end vape mods which can output more power than your typical vape pens and starter kits.

The higher power, higher heat, and thicker e-liquid leads to the production of thick, satisfying clouds.
We offer a huge range of shortfill e-liquids at 70VG / 30PG ratio. This is our most popular ratio sold, giving the perfect balance between great clouds while still maintaining excellent flavour.

Other Eliquid Ratios

There are other ratios available on the market, and the same rules apply as above.

If you own a vape pen, pod mod or general vape starter kit which often can’t output power higher than 60W you’ll want to be looking at 50VG / 50PG e liquid.

If you own anything more advanced than this, which you will typically find outputting power up to 200W, a 70VG / 30PG or higher ratio will suit you.
